Papon, born Angaraag Mahanta on 24 November 1975, in Nagaon (Assam), India, is an Indian playback singer, composer and folk-fusion artist.
He has become well-known for blending Assamese folk music with contemporary and global musical influences, and for singing across several Indian languages including Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Tamil and Marathi.

Early Life & Roots

Papon comes from a musical family: his father was Khagen Mahanta, a legendary figure in Assamese folk music, and his mother is Archana Mahanta.
Growing up, he was surrounded by folk traditions of Assam, as well as exposure to classical, ghazals and global music styles. He says he grew up on a “diet” of folk and classical music.
Initially he studied literature in Delhi but his heart pulled him toward music and the guitar, and eventually back to Assam for his musical roots.

Career & Musical Highlights

He is the founder and lead singer of the folk-fusion band Papon & The East India Company, which began in 2007 and blends Assamese folk with electronic and live instrumentation.
In Bollywood, some of his well-known songs include “Jiyein Kyun” (from Dum Maro Dum), “Kyon” (from Barfi!), “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” (from Dum Laga Ke Haisha) among others.
His approach: folk sensibility + modern soundscapes. He says “music is my identity, not business.”
