Kailash Kher (born 7 July 1973) is an Indian playback singer, composer and live performer known for his work in Hindi films, as well as his rock/folk fusion band Kailasa. He draws deeply from Indian folk and Sufi traditions, blending them with contemporary sounds.

Early Life & Background

He was born in Vinod Nagar, a locality in the Mayur Vihar area of East Delhi, in a Kashmiri family.
His father, Mehar Singh Kher, was a traditional folk singer; his mother is Chandrakanta. The environment gave him early exposure to folk and devotional music.
At age 14, he left home in search of a guru or institution for music training, but ultimately learned by listening and practicing intensely.
Before his singing career took off, he faced struggles including a failed business and even an attempt at suicide owing to depression in a dark period of his life.

Kailash’s breakthrough in Bollywood came with songs like “Allah Ke Bande” from Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II (2003) and “Rabba Ishq Na Hove” from Andaaz (2003).
In 2004 he founded the band Kailasa (alongside brothers Paresh and Naresh Kamath) which released its debut album Kailasa in 2006 featuring hits such as “Teri Deewani” and “Tauba Tauba”.
